Miller Canfield Celebrates Sarah Reasoner, Winner of Richard J. Seryak Award for Pro Bono Service
Miller Canfield is pleased to announce that Sarah Reasoner is the winner of the 2023 Richard J. Seryak Award in recognition of her outstanding pro bono service. The announcement was made by CEO Megan Norris.
Reasoner is a member of Miller Canfield’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. Her significant pro bono experience includes defending the property rights of a low-income client in rural West Michigan who had experienced flooding due to the actions of her neighbors.
In other notable pro bono matters, Reasoner was involved in the Hamama v. Adducci litigation, which she worked on with a team of Miller Canfield attorneys and the ACLU of Michigan, a major class action to protect some 1,400 Iraqi nationals living in the U.S. from deportation without due process in immigration courts.
Additionally, Reasoner worked on a life-changing expungement case for a woman who had some trouble in the past and has now turned her life around.
“We are incredibly proud of Sarah. She embodies the values that we hold dear,” Norris said. “At Miller Canfield, we take great pride in our commitment to pro bono work. It’s not just a part of our culture; it’s a fundamental obligation that each of our attorneys takes on when they enter the profession. Our mission is to serve not just our clients, but also our community, by ensuring that everyone has access to high-quality legal representation, regardless of their ability to pay.”
The annual Seryak Award was first given in 2015 in memory of Richard Seryak, who during his career at Miller Canfield exemplified the standard of pro bono service. Seryak’s family established the award to recognize attorneys who continue his legacy. The Seryak family provides a stipend for the award winner to donate to the legal service organization of his or her choice.
