Miller Canfield Named No. 1 Municipal Bond Financing Firm in Michigan/Mideast Region
Miller Canfield, a global law firm headquartered in Detroit, has again been ranked first among Michigan bond counsel law firms in the annual Bond Counsel Rankings.
In 2019, Miller Canfield bond attorneys opined on bond issues totaling $5.4 billion, ranking the firm first in Michigan, first in the Mideast region, and 18th in the United States. Miller Canfield is the only Michigan firm to be named in the top 50 firms nationwide, and has been recognized as the top Michigan bond counsel in these rankings nearly ever year for more than 30 years. The rankings are published by Refinitiv, a successor to Thomson Reuters.
With more than 25 attorneys in Michigan and Illinois, Miller Canfield's Public Finance Group is the largest group of dedicated municipal finance attorneys in Michigan. The group has experience in virtually every type of public finance transaction for capital projects and infrastructure improvements, renewable energy, economic development projects, public-private partnership projects, private equity bonds, refinancings and cash flow borrowings for all types of governmental issuers, including state and local governmental units, schools, hospitals, special purpose authorities, colleges and universities.
Some highlights of Miller Canfield's work in 2019 include:
- Serving as bond counsel on more than 140 bond issues for local government issuers in 2019 totaling over $2.187 billion, including certain private placement issues and issues sold to USDA Rural Development and the Michigan Finance Authority's revolving fund loan programs, which are not all taken into account in the Refinitiv rankings
- Serving as bond counsel to the Michigan Finance Authority, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Michigan Strategic Fund and State Building Authority on various refunding and new money financings totaling over $1.331 billion, including hospital revenue and refunding bonds for Henry Ford Health System, Bronson Healthcare Group and Munson Healthcare Group
- Serving as bond counsel to six public universities in Michigan in connection with various refunding and new money financings totaling $1.231 billion
- Assisting school districts throughout Michigan as bond counsel on 39 school finance transactions totaling over $901 million
- Serving as bond counsel to the City of Chicago, Cook County and other Illinois local government and school issuers on 18 transactions totaling over $897 million
