School Board Elections
On November 28, 2011, Governor Snyder signed into law a set of bills that require school board elections to be held on the general November election date in even years, beginning in 2012.
SB 427 and HB 4005, enrolled as Public Act 232 of 2011 and Public Act 233 of 2011, amend Michigan Election Law and the Revised School Code, respectively, to change prior state law, under which a school district may have held its regular board elections annually or in odd years in May or November.
If the November even year election date is a change from your district's regular board election date, you will want to consider current board terms and a transition schedule to adapt to this change in election date. Your by-laws may require amendment to conform to the law.
The legislation does not affect the dates on which a district may hold millage and bond elections.
