Senate Postpones Deadline for Biometrics

August 3, 2004

The Senate approved legislation that extends for another year the deadline for installing equipment capable of processing machine-readable, tamper-resistant passports and visas that contain biometric identifiers at all U.S. ports of entry. This legislation also extends for one more year the deadline for machine-readable, tamper-resistant passports for Visa Waiver participants. The new deadline for issuance of biometric passports for Visa Waiver participants who are issued passports that comply with those requirements is October 26, 2005.
