Reshma Sambare Named Among Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s Women in the Law
Miller Canfield real estate attorney Reshma Sambare is among the 34 women lawyers to be named in Michigan Lawyers Weekly's Women in the Law Class of 2021.
"We are tremendously proud of Reshma for earning this well-deserved recognition," said Miller Canfield CEO Megan Norris. "She is not only an exceptional lawyer and asset to her clients and the firm, but also a leader in the community and a generous provider of pro bono services."
Sambare joined Miller Canfield in 2013. Her practice is focused on commercial and industrial real estate development, public-private partnership (P3) projects, and India-U.S. cross-border transactions. Having earned an engineering degree and worked as a commercial construction manager prior to law school, Sambare brings a unique mix of superior legal knowledge and real-world construction experience to her representation of clients in construction and real estate.
She has been instrumental in some of the largest and most impactful projects in Michigan, including:
- The development and subsequent concession and lease negotiations related to the largest public-private partnership project in the Midwest: Little Caesars Arena and the surrounding retail, hospitality and entertainment venues in what is now The District Detroit, a 50-block Olympia Development project located just north of downtown Detroit
- The City of Detroit and its Brownfield Redevelopment Authority's massive land assembly project that enabled Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' $4.5 billion investment and expansion in the City of Detroit and four other Michigan plants, one of the largest and most complex urban land assembly projects in Michigan's history
- The acquisition of real property and development of the RACER Willow Run Arsenal of Democracy site in Ypsilanti, a large and complex project involving the investment, acquisition, ground lease and development of the former Willow Run property, which is now the site of the American Center for Mobility, a testing facility and proving ground that has positioned Michigan as a leader in autonomous vehicle technology development
Sambare makes significant contributions of her time and effort to pro bono work and volunteerism. She is the founding president of the South Asian Women's Association of Greater Lansing (SAWA), a nonprofit that provides a forum to further South Asian women's interests through intercultural dialogue and initiatives and provides resources to address issues related to relational abuses, including between spouses, family members, parent-child, LGBTQ or elder abuse.
She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Advocacy Program and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center's VAWA and U Visa Pro Bono Panel. And in 2019, Sambare co-founded the Jhep Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in India. The organization's mission is to empower and transform lives in rural and under-privileged areas of India through safe and sustainable living environment and skill-based education.
Women in the Law is an annual recognition of lawyers who have made outstanding contributions to the practice of law and who set an example for other lawyers. Recognized as pioneers, trailblazers, educators and role models, Michigan Lawyers Weekly chooses attorneys who have shown tremendous leadership and offer a wealth of expertise in diverse areas of the law. Honorees will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Sept. 9, 2021. Profiles of the honorees will appear in a special section on Sept. 13.
