Miller Canfield Earns Top Honors for Diversity
Miller Canfield is pleased to announce that for the fourth year in a row, it has earned the designation of Mansfield Certified Plus, making it the only Michigan-headquartered firm and one of just 92 nationwide to meet the criteria in 2021.
Firms earn Mansfield certification by demonstrating that at least 30 percent of people affirmatively considered for firm governance positions, promotions and lateral-hire opportunities are women and attorneys from underrepresented groups, such as people of color, LGBTQ+ and attorneys with disabilities. To earn Mansfield Certified Plus, firms must not only consider women and people who are from underrepresented groups, but they must meet the goal of at least 30% representation in leadership roles.
"Representation matters. It's about more than just being able to claim a percentage of women and members of underrepresented groups," said Miller Canfield CEO Megan Norris. "While we are certainly pleased that more than half of our lateral hires during the past year have been women and members of underrepresented groups, it is even more important that members of those groups have opportunities to influence the firm as leaders. We are proud of the progress we have made in increasing representation at all levels. At the same time, we are aware of the work that still needs to be done and are committed to doing it."
At Miller Canfield, women and members of underrepresented groups account for:
- 75% of partner promotions
- 60% of the firm's nomination committee
- 40% of the managing directors
- 66% of the firm's executive leadership
- 60% of the compensation committee
- 43% of resident directors
Mansfield certification is an initiative of Diversity Lab, the leading incubator for innovative solutions to foster diversity and inclusion in law firms.
