Detroit Corporation Counsel Lawrence Garcia Joins Miller Canfield
Miller Canfield is pleased to announce that Lawrence García has joined the firm's Employment and Labor Group.
García comes to Miller Canfield from the City of Detroit, where he served as Corporation Counsel from January 2018 to November 2021.
As the head of the City of Detroit's legal department, García oversaw the delivery of legal services to all branches and agencies of government. He assisted in the administration of Detroit's 2020 election and the successful defense of the city during the subsequent litigation challenging the results. García also oversaw the legal work involved with major redevelopment and economic development initiatives, including the expansion of the Mack engine plant and Jefferson North Assembly Plant by FCA US (now Stellantis). Similarly, he helped coordinate the land deals behind Amazon's new $400 million distribution center on the site of the former Michigan State Fairgrounds.
García has 25 years of litigation experience and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates as well as a member and two-time past president of the Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan. He volunteers as chair of the Cesar Chavez Academy Board of Directors. He serves as chair of the Michigan Hispanic Collaborative and is a former secretary of the Detroit Institute of Arts Board of Directors. García is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.
