Marc Swanson Recognized by M&A Advisor
Miller Canfield, a global, full-service law firm headquartered in Detroit, is pleased to announce that Marc Swanson has been recognized as a winner of the M&A Advisor 7th Annual Emerging Leaders Awards.
The M&A Advisor Emerging Leaders, formerly known as the 40 Under 40 Awards, recognizes and celebrates the achievements of young M&A, financing and turnaround professionals who have reached a high level of success, and who have made notable contributions to their profession and communities.
Swanson, a principal at Miller Canfield, was recognized for his work on complex and highly visible cases, including the City of Detroit’s bankruptcy, the largest and most complex municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. In that case, he argued and won dismissal of a proposed class action case brought against the city, challenging the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s termination of service to residents, which had resulted from residents’ unpaid bills.
Swanson also argued and won two complex jurisdictional motions which allowed the court to grant summary judgment in favor of Detroit in a case brought by Citizens United Against Corrupt Government, which alleged the city had violated the Open Meetings Act in relation to closed sessions held to discuss confidential bankruptcy related legal matters.
Swanson leads the team that handles claim objections in the city’s bankruptcy case. There are approximately 3,000 claims being handled by the team. He also handles numerous motions to enforce the city’s confirmed plan of adjustment and other orders entered in the bankruptcy case.
Swanson is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, is admitted to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court Western District of Michigan and Eastern District of Michigan. He is a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association and the University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit. He has donated a substantial amount of pro bono time on a project for Cass Community Social Services to help with job placement and training for the most underprivileged residents of Detroit, and was recently selected to serve on Cass Community Social Services’ board of directors.
Swanson and other winners will be recognized at a June 10, 2016, gala in New York.
