I am excited to welcome this year's summer associates, who join us today!

This impressive group brings unique academic, professional and community experiences gained all around the world. I look forward to all of us taking part in making a meaningful and lasting impact on the careers of these future fellow practitioners.  

Sean Rucker is the summer associate coordinator for the 2021 class. He, along with Danielle Mason Anderson and Susanna Brennan, will coordinate the workloads for summer associates and solicit assignments from all of you on their behalf. Please reach out with projects on which these associates might be able to assist you. Dee Allen will also help manage the day-to-day operations of our summer associate program and will be available throughout the summer to assist with any questions or issues that arise.

Erica Auh
Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, May 2022

An Ann Arbor resident, Erica joins us from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, where she is a member of the Northwestern University Law Review, the Women's Leadership Coalition and the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. She earned her B.A. in economics from Wellesley College and both her Doctor of Philosophy in social welfare and her Master of Social Work degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award. Erica completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Petris Center for Health Care Markets and Consumer Welfare, where she researched employment and mental health in California. She then worked in Seoul, South Korea, as an assistant professor at the Ewha Womans University Department of Social Welfare, where she received numerous research grants and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in welfare policy and international social welfare. Last summer, she worked as a judicial extern for the Hon. Judith E. Levy of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Erica is fluent in Korean, and her interests include pilates, golf and flower arrangement.


Anthony Cimini

Anthony Cimini joins us from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he is a junior member of the Law Review and the Moot Court Board of Advocates and has worked as a research assistant and teaching assistant. He participated in the Detroit Mercy Law First-Year Experiential Clinic, where he provided pro bono assistance to individuals facing negligent supervision and battery claims and assisted individuals facing property tax foreclosure. A native of Harper Woods, Michigan, Anthony earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, summa cum laude, and a Bachelor of Arts in comparative religion from Western Michigan University. Last summer, he interned with the Hon. Jennifer Faunce of Macomb County Circuit Court. Anthony is a board member for the St. Clair County Health Department and is the president/founder of Vision of Hope Charities, a nonprofit organization which assists indigent individuals seeking recovery from substance use disorders by providing rent, food, transportation and clothing.


Ryan Garippo

A native of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Ryan joins us from the University of Notre Dame Law School, where he is an associate editor for the Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in rhetorical communication, summa cum laude, from the University of Illinois, where he was on the dean's list and was recognized in the top 3% of his graduating class. Last year, he worked as a legal researcher for the 2020 COVID-19 Law Student Pro Bono Group and interned for the Hon. Sara Darrow of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois. He previously worked as a business development intern for OAG Aviation Worldwide and an international media researcher for the University of Illinois Department of Communication. Ryan volunteers with Be the Match and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and he also enjoys watching sports, reading and trying new restaurants.


Ziena Hatem

A Detroit resident, Ziena joins us from the University of Toledo College of Law, where she is a 1L class representative for the Student Bar Association, a member of the Arab American Law Society Association, and the Executive Board Fundraising Chair of the International Law Society. Ziena has also worked as an international immigration volunteer for the school's Office of International Student and Scholar Services. She earned her Master of Medical Administration from Walden University and her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy. Her other volunteer experience includes serving as a regional development representative for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; executive advisor for "C2" Courage to Fight Breast Cancer, which supports educational workshops on breast cancer early intervention for women in remote parts of Lebanon; and an executive board member of the American Druze Foundation, where she has helped raise thousands of dollars to support people in need in Lebanon and Syria. Ziena speaks fluent Arabic and has completed mission trips to El Salvador and Lebanon.


Katlyn Koegel

A native of Flint, Katlyn is pursuing both her J.D. and her Master of Public Policy degrees from Pepperdine University, where she is a junior staffer for the Pepperdine Law Review and associate editor of the Pepperdine Public Policy Review. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in international studies, summa cum laude, from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, with a minor in business. She was a member of the Hope College Pre-Law Society, Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society, and was also an Emmaus Scholar. Katlyn spent a semester abroad in Paris and speaks conversational French. Her professional experience includes working as a policy intern for Neithercut Philanthropy Advisors in Traverse City, Michigan; an education program intern for the C.S. Mott Foundation in Flint; and an intern at the Supreme Court of Uganda. Her interests include impressionism, civil rights and economics.


Maya Pascal

Originally from Mississauga, Ontario, Maya is a dean's list student at Michigan State University College of Law, where she is a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society and a board member for the Student Bar Association. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in philosophy and French from Oakland University, where she played on the soccer team and was a 4-time NCAA Academic All-American. She was also a member of the Honors College. Fluent in French, she previously worked for TransUnion, where she supported the legal team and communicated with government representatives in Quebec. She has also served as a special projects intern for the Brampton (Ontario) Board of Trade, and as a law clerk for Anselmi Mierzejewski Ruth & Sowle P.C. in Bloomfield Hills.


Phillip Patterson

Phil joins us from Wayne State University Law School, where he is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Business Law and a member of the Student Publication Supervisory Board, Delta Theta Phi Fraternity Executive Council, and the mock trial program. He also works as an admissions ambassador for the law school. Now living in Rochester Hills, Michigan, he earned his Bachelor of Science in liberal arts from Excelsior College in Albany, New York. He previously completed a public service externship with the National Labor Relations Board and a judicial externship for the Hon. Michael E. Servitto of the 16th Judicial Circuit Court in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Phil served more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and is fluent in Persian-Farsi.
