Miller Canfield is pleased to announce that Carrick Craig has joined the law firm’s Employment and Labor Group in its office in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Craig comes to the firm from Western Michigan University, where he served as General Counsel and had spent more than two decades providing legal advice and assistance to the university.
“Carrick will be instrumental in supporting our expanding Higher Education practice, which is known for providing a full range of services to colleges and universities, from advising on real estate, finance and transactional matters to taking on some of the most complex litigation and Title IX matters in the country,” said Miller Canfield CEO Megan Norris.
Miller Canfield’s Higher Education practice is an interdisciplinary team that represents private not-for-profit institutions, for-profit education providers, education and athletic associations, and educational foundations on a wide range of matters. This includes project-oriented work such as financing of major improvements, counseling in connection with U.S. Department of Education/Office for Civil Rights audits, and defending significant, high-profile litigation, as well as providing day-to-day general counsel services.
While at Western Michigan University, Craig directed a campus-wide effort to comply with Department of Education Title IX guidelines, culminating the adoption of a new Title IX policy. In addition, he served as the University's Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy and Contact Officer and was in charge of developing and enforcing policies related to the confidentiality of protected health information.
Craig is an active member of the American Bar Association, Labor and Employment Section and the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment and Negligence sections and serves on the State Bar of Michigan’s District F Character and Fitness Committee. He has served on the Annual Meeting, Continuing Legal Education, and Publication committees of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
