Miller Canfield attorneys will offer free legal help to new and aspiring business owners during Detroit Startup Week, June 18-22, 2018.

Miller Canfield and other prominent Detroit law firms and legal departments will host the fourth annual Small Business Legal Academy (SBLA), just one of the many offerings during Startup Week, presenting free legal panels on key topics that startups need to know, including intellectual property, employment, tax, funding and real property issues.

The one-hour panels will take place June 18, 1-2 p.m. at Bamboo, 1420 Washington Blvd., and June 19, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., at 20 Witherell St. (ground floor of the Madison Building near Grand Circus Park). For a schedule of panels, visit https://techstarsstartupweekdetroit2018.sched.com/.

Additionally, Startup Week will host two free legal office hours sessions, where entrepreneurs can meet individually for up to an hour with teams of experienced lawyers from Detroit area firms and companies to discuss their specific legal needs. The office hours are co-sponsored by nonprofit TechTown and will take place June 20, 1-4 p.m. and June 21, 9 a.m.-noon, in the Cadillac Café. The Cadillac Café is located at the Madison Avenue side of the Michigan Opera Theater. Advance registration is encouraged.

Startup Week will offer events in downtown Detroit, including the Chase Basecamp, located in Grand Circus Park, where there will be two large air-conditioned tents, food trucks, a job fair and a small business marketplace.

The SBLA is the creation of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo), which launched the first academy in New York City at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 2013, pulling together dozens of member firms and legal and financial services organizations. Since then, there have been more SBLAs in New York, Houston, and Detroit, with more planned in other cities. SBLA has provided hundreds of low-income startups, mom-and-pop businesses, and aspiring entrepreneurs legal guidance they could not otherwise afford.
