The State Bar of Michigan's Labor and Employment Law Council has selected Megan Norris, Miller Canfield Managing Directors Chairwoman, as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award.

Norris is nationally recognized as a leading labor and employment litigator who has served as lead counsel in many high-profile lawsuits. She has particular expertise in legal issues related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family Medical Leave Act, speaking on these topics for national organizations, including the National Association of College and University Attorneys, National Employment Law Institute, and the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Norris is also known as a leader within Miller Canfield, where she has practiced law for more than 32 years. As Chair of the Managing Directors, a position to which she was first elected in 2013, she oversees 500+ attorneys, paralegals, staff and directors. She is one of only approximately 10 women to serve as chair of the largest 200 law firms in the United States. She also leads Miller Canfield's Employment and Labor Group, overseeing 30 attorneys and staffers.

"We are truly fortunate to have Megan as a friend and colleague," said Miller Canfield CEO Michael McGee. "She is not only a nationally recognized lawyer in the area of employment law, but she is a leader in the legal community and a generous contributor to civic and community organizations."

Norris has been recognized by numerous professional organizations. She is a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, Litigation Counsel of America, and the American College of Trial Lawyers. She has earned the highly coveted Band 1 ranking by "Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business," and has received Lawyer of the Year recognition by "Best Lawyers in America." She was named in the Top 100 Lawyers and Top 25 Michigan Business Women by Super Lawyers, a Top Lawyer in DBusiness Magazine, and a Leader in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Norris has a long history of service to professional organizations, including the United States District Court Local Rules Advisory Committee; American Bar Association, Litigation and Labor and Employment Sections; State Bar of Michigan, Labor and Employment Law Section Council; Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and the Detroit Barristers' Association, where she has served as president and board member; the Institute of Continuing Legal Education Labor Advisory Board; and the National Employment Law Institute Advisory Board. She was appointed by Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer to serve on the Detroit Police Commission, where she served as chair from 2003 to 2004.

The Distinguished Service Award will be presented at the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Section mid-winter meeting on Jan. 25, 2019.
