Miller Canfield attorney Richard Walawender has been appointed Honorary Consul of Poland in Detroit. The appointment marks the first time in nearly 70 years that Detroit has been home to a Polish consulate.
The appointment was made by Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Walawender will serve a five-year term. His territory covers the State of Michigan and is within the jurisdiction of Poland's General Consulate of Chicago.
The Honorary Consul office will be located in the Detroit office of Miller Canfield, where Walawender is a Principal in the firm's International Practice and where he serves as the firm's Corporate and Transactions Group co-leader.
Walawender co-founded the Miller Canfield's first Polish office in 1991; the firm now has 16 offices located in the U.S., Canada, China, Mexico as well as offices located in Warsaw, Gdynia and Wroclaw, Poland. Since that time, he has been fostering trade and investment between Michigan and Poland, and, in his new role, will expand those efforts, especially in the automotive, software, technology and food products sectors.
Walawender's responsibilities will also include serving Michigan's large Polish population.
