With more than $1.5 billion in transactions to date, Anna M. Maiuri has extensive experience in helping corporations, business owners and operators assess environmental liabilities when purchasing, selling or leasing assets both across the country and around the world. She is particularly experienced in helping utility companies and manufacturers achieve regulatory compliance through effective negotiations with governmental regulators that result in cost-effective strategies that fulfill both the client's and the regulator's needs. Anna has saved her clients over half a million dollars in penalties through reasoned negotiations of various consent orders for Clean Air Act, CERCLA, Part 201 and other alleged regulatory violations. To each of her clients, Anna brings a comprehensive understanding of the various environmental laws and regulations and how regulators interpret them.

The most important asset an attorney can bring to a client is the ability to decipher the client's true goals and objectives -- sometimes before the client even knows what they are – and then develop a strategy for achieving them.”
Anna M. Maiuri

Experience

Anna also has extensive experience in complex matters including developing a strategy to address methane issues at a former municipal landfill, obtaining wetland determinations, and obtaining a remedial action plan approval for

Anna was instrumental in breaking a deadlock between the client and regulators that was holding up an environmental remedial action plan. By bringing all the parties together -- in a six-hour marathon meeting -- and persuading everyone that doing what is in the public’s best interest put them all on the same side, she and her team were able to find common ground and develop a strategy to get the plan approved.

In another matter, Anna coordinated a team of environmental attorneys and consultants to assess the environmental liabilities in a $400-plus million transaction involving an automotive supplier client seeking to purchase 45 various manufacturing facilities in 15 countries.

And in another case, Anna was asked to step in on behalf of a client that was having a difficult time with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) regarding several violations at a particular site. As a result, efforts at remediation were stymied. Although she was not working with that particular site at the time, the client sought Anna’s help to repair the relationship and get remedial efforts back on track. By developing an action list, assigning tasks and developing concrete agendas for meetings with the regulators, she and her team were able to get the vast majority of compliance issues completed within one year, thus avoiding a significant penalty and restoring positive dialogue with the MDEQ.

My prior experience as an auditor for the U.S. General Accounting Office gives me unique insight into the way government and regulators work – and where the system sometimes fails. My clients benefit because I understand what happens behind the scenes.”
