Diversity Quick Facts

Miller Canfield is committed to a diverse workforce and work environment that is reflective of our multi-cultural society and global marketplace.

  • In 1997, Miller Canfield joined with other Detroit area firms to publish a recruiting brochure to highlight the benefits of practicing law in Detroit. The brochure has been distributed to law schools in Michigan and through out the United States. It has been very successful in increasing the diversity of applicants for Miller Canfield and other city firms.

  • Miller Canfield works closely with multi-cultural bar associations, including the Wolverine Bar Association, to identify potential summer associates and lateral attorneys.

  • Two women have been elected Managing Directors over the past six years including Anna Maiuri, its current chair. Jerome Watson became the second African-American elected Managing Director in 2005 and was re-elected for a second term in 2007.

  • The impact of our efforts has been evident in the increasing diversity of our firm.  In 1994, 8.3% of our firm was classified as minority.  Our commitment is to increase our diversity percentage to 15%.

  • Miller Canfield continues to focus our recruiting efforts to major Michigan and national law schools that have higher minority student populations than the national average of 19%.  These include Georgetown, Notre Dame, Wayne State and the University of Michigan.

  • Incoming associate classes continue to average over 48% female, reflective of the national average of women attending law school.

  • Summer associate classes for the last three years have averaged above 40% minorities and 50% female.

  • In 2006, the firm hired its first attorney who is a leading practitioner in the Islamic and Middle Eastern community in the Detroit area.  Tim Attalla works closely with the legal team developing outbound and inbound business in Dubai and other states and countries in the Middle East.

  • In 2008, the firm promoted Ronda Harris to Office Manager of our global headquarters in Detroit - the first African-American to earn that position firmwide.
